ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES
The academic activities comprise the period of orientation, course registration exercise, learning activities and other requirements for graduation. It is expected that students must cover certain hours within the duration of their programme as follows; Ph.D 192 hours, Masters 388 hours and PGD 370 hours. As a student of APIS, utilizing the time allocated to each academic activity will help you actualize the goals of your academic pursuit.
1.1 Orientation Programme
Orientation programme are organized for new students at the beginning of every academic session during which students are familiarized with
APIS mode of study. Usually, the orientation programme takes place at the Institute centre. The purpose for organizing the orientation programme for new students is to give them the opportunity to be acquainted with the various facilities and support services that will enhance their learning such as first contact point at the institute, selection and registration of courses, information, guidance and counseling services. The new students will also have the opportunity to interact with the authorities. As a new student, you are advised to avail yourself with the orientation programme as it will assist you to commence your programme on good footing.
1.2 Mode of Study
At APIS, students are strongly advised to attend lectures regularly and ensure that they have existing e-mail addresses, whatsapp page and phone number for contact purposes. The mode of studies in APIS are designed through the various means:
(a) Plenary Session (In-Person)
This is a mode of study in which all the courses are to be covered by the various lecturers and students interact with their lecturers’ face to face (contacts). They are normally held on weekend or as the case may be.
During the in-person contacts, which are scheduled for two days, it is expected that both lecturers and students should consume hours per day.
(b) Online Mode of Study
Basically, most of APIS lectures are scheduled online on weekend basis. Lectures and other academic activities are communicated via zoom, google meet and other forms of online learning platforms.
Lecturers and students are expected to consume a total of 20hours that is 10hours per day;
(c) Study Tour
The study tour is a compulsory learning activity for students. During the study tour activity, students are taken to a designated area by the institute different from their environment of study. The purpose of the study is to build human capacity through leadership training and encourage learners explore a selected theme.
(d) Professional Training/Certification
In addition to the rigorous Postgraduate academic programmes, the Institute equally exposes students to their professional practices. The Institute partners with other professional bodies such as Society for Peace Studies and Practice (SPSP), Citizenship and Leadership Training Centre (CLTC), Chartered Institute of Social Work Practitioners of Nigeria (c-ISOWN), National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and United Nations Office on Genocide Prevention and the Responsibility to Protect (OSAPG) for training APIS student’s to be Professional Practitioners. Through these partnerships, students write their exams and are licensed or chartered to practice their profession.
1.3 Courses
A student upon completion of screening and documentation is expected to register for courses relevant to his/her programme of choice. PhD student is expected to register 27 credits units while Masters student is expected to register 41 credit units and PGD student to register 38 credit units for the whole of semesters before graduation.
1.4 Course Registration Procedure
Collect course registration forms at the point of screening and documentation and enter the required courses in the registration form.
Upon completion, submit the original copies of the course registration and make photocopies of the completed course registration form for your personal safe keep. (Use the course the course titles and codes details in 5,0 to register for your courses)
2.0 REQUIRMENTS FOR GRADUATION
To be eligible for graduation, students should ensure they fulfilled all the necessary requirements for proper documentations and course registrations, attain 70% attendance, sumit all assignments to the academic unit, attend the compulsory study tour, participate in both national and international conferences, make at least three paper presentations in both local and international journals (compulsory for Ph.D student), write the required examinations and the research project, dissertation/thesis. Student should ensure they earn the minimum credit unit before graduation.
3.0 STUDENTS' WELFARE FEEDBACK MECHANISM
The office of the Student Affairs Officer is in charge of attending to students who might be having challenges in their academic pursuit. The Student Affairs Officer of the Institute works closely with Executive Officer Academic to ensure students derives maximum satisfaction of service.
Therefore, students are enjoined to forward all complains and suggestions to the Institute’s Director through the desk of the Student Affairs Officer for improvement and service delivery.
Other areas the student affairs officer attends to students’ welfare are:
(i) Deferment of Admission

(ii) Change of Programme and Course
This is done when a student draws the attention of the Institute to the issue. Basically, change of programme and course is at the student’s demand of which the student is expected to pay the University’s stipulated fee via the portal for change of programme and course.
Thereafter, print out the form and take to the appropriate authorities concern for authentication.
(iii) New Students who are Wrongly Admitted to a Programme
(a) Students in this category should notify the institute through the Student Affairs Officer
(b) The Student Affairs Officer at the instance of receiving the complaint from the student forwards it to the Director who is expected to present the issue to the Academic Board.
4.0 SCHEDULE OF PAYMENTS
Students are advised to follow the guidelines below for payment of tuition fees and other fees:
A) LOCAL STUDENTS
i) Upon documentation, collect schedule of payments.
ii) Carefully study the schedule to know actual amount you are suppose to pay for each session.
iii) Pay fees according to semester.
iv) Note the different designated account numbers on the schedule before
making your payment.
v) Immediately after payment, contact the institute accountant for receipt.
B) INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
Foreign students are expected to make payment directly into the institute account with their payment code.
5.0 USE OF INSTITUTE'S FACILITIES
Students are allowed the use of Institute facilities for their academic purposes. The following are areas where students are allowed to use for their study:
(i) Library
The library is usually opened on a daily basis. Students can make use of the library for personal study. Students can borrow books in the library for assignments and other purposes. It is the duty of the Institute’s librarian to ensure students borrow and return whatever book they borrow at the appropriate time. The University library is also open to students for further research.
(ii) Lecture Halls
Students are allowed to use any of the lecture halls for personal study, group assignments and other group discussions. In a situation where students may want to have special group studies, the group leader should contact the academic officer of the Institute for proper arrangement of using any of the lecture halls.
6.0 ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION
You are expected to fulfill all the obligations required of you before proper assessment and evaluation can be given to you. Student are assessed on or before the commencement of semester examinations.
Assessment can take the followings:
(i) Written tests and quiz
(ii) Group work and presentations
(iii) Individual assignments
6.1 In-person Contact Sessions
Usually at the end of the in-person contact, students are given tasks either as a take home or inform of class quiz. The purpose is to ensure students grab what has been discussed during learning process of the in-person contact.
6.2 Assignment
The institute considers assignment as an important mechanism for assessing and evaluating students. Usually, assignment is at the prerogative of course lecturers. It is the course lecturer’s duty to consider the nature of assignments to students. But in a situation where assignment is given to students, they are expected to submit two (2) soft bind copies to the academic unit and soft copy of the assignment may be submitted to the lecturer via e-mail as may be demanded by the course lecturer. Students should know that assignment constitutes 30% of their semester course work. Therefore, students should ensure that their assignments are submitted at the appropriate time and taken very seriously.
6.3 Attendance
This is another measure the institute uses to assess and evaluate students at the end of each semester. Attendance in any course is compulsory and students are expected to have 75% records of attendance before eligible to write examinations. Attendance in all forms of activities is very crucial.

6.4 Examinations
The Institute conducts examinations at the end of each semester. Semester examinations assess students on the entire course registered in the semester. The examination constitutes 70% of student total score in a course.
NOTE
Students should register for each course in the semester before writing the examination. You are not allowed to write a course which you did not register. It is important you contact the academic unit for proper guidance on course registration.
However, students should know that examinations are very important components of a learning process. Therefore, credibility and integrity of the process must be maintained. There are policies, rules and regulations that guide conduct of examinations in the institute.
Policies guiding administration of examination in the institute include the followings:
(i) Deferment of Examination
Any student who may wish to defer his/her examinations should notify the academic unit on time. Such a student must apply well in advance instead of waiting until the end of semester when examination are about to commence.
(ii) Make up Examinations
In rare case such as sickness, National assignment make up examination may be granted subject to approval by the Academic Board
(iii) Eligibility for Graduation
For graduation, a student must earn the required credit units in both semesters registered. These include the seminar presentations, compulsory study tour, publications of paper (for Ph.D students) and research work.
Examinations rules and Regulations
There are laid down rules and regulations guiding examinations in the institute. Students are advised to read these rules carefully before they proceed to write their examinations.
6.5 Disciplinary Measures Against Students Examination Misconduct
Students are strongly advised to take note of the following as examination misconduct. Any student found wanting in any of the under listed offences shall be disqualified from the entire examinations and expulsion by the University is applicable where necessary
(i) No student is allowed to enter the examination hall with any reading materials, hand bag, cell phone and lap top.
(ii) Communication in whatever form with others during an examination without the permission of the invigilator is not allowed
(iii) Students are not allowed to write on their question paper for any reason and exchange of question paper is strictly prohibited and offenders shall be penalized.
(iv) Leaving the examination hall during examination is not allowed except by the permission of the invigilator
(v) Changing of sitting position in the examination hall is not allowed. Such offender shall be disqualified from writing the paper.
(vi) Attacking an invigilator or any examination officer in the examination hall is a serious offence. The student shall be expelled from the University or rusticated
Examination malpractice is regarded as a very serious offence by the University and so it attracts high sanctions. The penalty ranges from a warning to outright rustication. Students are advised to desist from all forms of examination misconduct because the Institute maintains zero tolerance for examination malpractice in whatever form it manifests itself.
